We’re coming into a global economic winter, exacerbated by central bank policy and the creation of money backed by nothing. The world is seeing more debt and backroom banker passes than ever before, as friends are given million dollar knitted mittens and citizens are left outside in a brewing snowstorm.
Economic winter is always followed by spring, when there are new technologies and opportunities.
Those in power are currently jostling behind the scenes to try to stay powerful, and to let out new technologies in a managed trickle — leaving them still in control.
If the new technology is energy that is close to free and ecologically green then it makes the shift more tricky.
No one with power wants to give it up.
If a few have power they will fight each other to stay there. They will use whatever resources they have — current technology, finances, people’s bodies, political sway.
Alliances are being made and broken behind closed doors right now. Events and tensions are building. Propaganda is the norm as social media and alternative media could let the cat out of the bag before deals are made, territory is taken, or new systems are fully formed at others’ expense.
In the meantime, we’re watching the weather report and making hot chocolate.

Europeans Defy US to Join China-Led Bank via Financial Times and The Australian
France, Germany and Italy have agreed to follow Britain’s lead and join a China-led international development bank, The Financial Times said on Tuesday citing ‘European officials’.
The decision by the European troika follows Britain’s decision to join the bank and will add further pressure on Australia and the US to follow suit.
With Australia, South Korea and other nations also contemplating following suit, the moves are viewed as China eroding America’s ties with its closest allies.
Irish Minister for Finance Personally Sells Euro Fund and Buys Gold Fund via Independent.ie
The Irish Minister for Finance bought the traditional hedge against tough times by buying into a Gold exchange fund over the last year.
The grim outlook for Europe’s economy last year seems to have inspired the minister’s decision to sell out of a fund that tracked top European shares.
He has a track record stretching back decades of canny private investments.
Gold is an asset that has outperformed in times of both inflation and deflation.
Police Barricade European Central Bank Ahead of Protests via Kitco
Police in Frankfurt, Germany, have put up barricades and barbed wire around the headquarters of the European Central Bank as they brace for potentially violent demonstrations against government austerity and capitalism.
The Blockupy alliance says activists plan to try to blockade the new headquarters of the ECB ahead of a ceremony Wednesday inaugurating the building, and to disrupt what they term capitalist business as usual.
