Gold: Through-Line of Civilization
The Eternal Medium From Mesopotamia to Florence Florins to Blockchain

The Through-Line
Gold does not change.
Empires change. Rulers change. Currencies change. Crowds rise and fall.
Gold remains.
This is the through-line of civilization. It is the one constant that connects the pyramids of Egypt to the satellites orbiting Earth, from the merchants of Florence and Venice to the miners of the Klondike, from the florin to the futures market.
Gold is civilization’s yardstick. It’s the anchor that everything else is measured against.
And right now, everything else is being revalued.
The Florence Florin: When Merchants Broke the Nobility
In 1252, the Republic of Florence minted the gold florin.
It wasn’t the first gold coin. But it was the first gold coin that mattered for a new kind of power.
The florin weighed 3.5 grams of pure gold. It became the international currency of Europe for over two centuries. But mostly, it created something the world had never seen: a merchant class that could operate without the nobility.
Before the florin, power was land.
You were a lord with serfs, or you were a serf with nothing. The nobility controlled everything because they controlled the land and the armies.
The nobility controlled the new technology of the stirrup, that combined a human with a horse to create a powerful elite military tool.
But gold changed the medium of power.
A merchant with florins could:
- Hire mercenaries without a lord’s permission
- Travel across borders without a lord’s protection
- Trade with distant cities without a lord’s oversight
- Build wealth that could not be confiscated as easily as land
The florin created the first decentralized power network in European history. Merchants could move value across distances, bypassing the tolls and tariffs of feudal lords.
The nobility didn’t disappear. But they had to share power with a new class: those who held gold and created their own payment routes and relationships.
The nobility wanted luxury goods from far away to show off their wealth. The merchants made it happen. New coastal cities grew up and the merchants made goods for those citizens, who bypassed being serfs.
This was the first great shift from centralized to decentralized power.
Gold made it possible.
The Medium Is the Message
Marshall McLuhan understood that every medium shapes the structure of human interactions.
The media we use to communicate doesn’t just form our communication, it frames what we think about and how we think about it.
Gold was the first medium of value that could:
- Cross borders without permission
- Store wealth without decay
- Transfer power without armies
The florin wasn’t just a coin. It was a new medium for a new kind of civilization.
Where merchants could rise alongside nobles, where cities could challenge kingdoms, where trade routes could bypass the old toll roads of extraction.
The same pattern repeats in every era.
With every new technology.
Those who control the medium control the message. And when the medium changes, power shifts.
Today, the medium is changing again. We are watching the old money medium face the same challenge that the feudal lords faced in Florence.
A new class is rising. New technology. New payment rails and trade routes. And like the merchants of Florence, they are using a new medium to bypass the old extraction points.
Crowds and Power: The Eternal Pattern
Elias Canetti, Nobel Laureate for his work with the emotions of crowds, the psychopathology of power, described the crowd as a group of individuals who lose themselves in a unit
It’s a closed system where hierarchies dissolve and everyone feels as powerful as those who rule them.
The crowd is not chaos. The crowd is the old power structure’s greatest threat.
Canetti identified the “reversal crowd” as oppressed citizens who invert authority and use their united strength to take down kings.
The French Revolution. The Russian Revolution. Every mass uprising.
The rulers know this pattern. They’ve studied it for centuries.
And so, when the crowd begins to stir, the rulers redirect.
They seed fear through media, trying to transform an angry crowd into a frightened crowd.
A crowd that runs to the ruler’s solution.
A crowd that punishes those individuals who do not.
The elite invent scapegoats to transform an angry crowd into a baiting crowd.
One that attacks the designated enemy instead of the rulers.
If they succeed, the elite keep their throne while the masses chase straw with pitchforks, and finally go home exhausted.
This is the pattern. It repeats. It’s repeating now.
The Extraction
Carroll Quigley, brilliant historian of the mid-1900s, in Tragedy and Hope, described civilization as an extraction ecosystem.
All civilizations transfers value from the many to the few.
Every empire has one. The methods change, but the pattern remains.
In medieval Florence, the nobility extracted through land and labor. They promised safety for their serfs. Serfs worked the fields. Lords took the harvest.
But the florin created a parallel structure.
Merchants exchanged value through trade, and they did not need the nobility’s permission to do it.
Gold enabled the first parallel exchange system. It was not centralized in a king’s vault. It was distributed across merchant pouches and city banks.
Quigley would see, and predicted what is happening today.
The old extraction system, central banks, fiat currency, debt-based money, is being challenged by a new parallel structure: decentralized finance, cryptocurrency, sound money.
The old apparatus extracts through debt, inflation, fees and control. The new parallel structure exchanges through innovation, bypassing the old tolls.
Gold is the through-line connecting these cycles. It was there in Florence. It is here now.
Where We Are Now
We are living through another shift in the medium of power.
The old centralized system is losing control.
They are desperately trying to instil international fear but they can’t move fast enough. Institutions live to protect themselves.
The crowd is stirring.
Inflation, debasement, inequality and overreach have created a reversal crowd. Citizens are beginning to question the old structure.
The rulers are doing what rulers always do:
Redirecting fear.
Central bank digital currencies are being positioned as the solution to problems the rulers created. The message is: “Trust ‘money’. We will protect you. Use our digital money.”
But the medium matters.
A CBDC is the ultimate extraction tool. It allows:
– Negative interest rates (your money disappears over time)
- Transaction limits (you can only spend what they allow, when and where they say)
- Programmable expiration (your money expires when they say so you can’t build wealth)
- Complete surveillance (every transaction is tracked)
The old extraction apparatus wants total control. They always did, but the new medium makes this possible.
But the crowd is seeing and forming in decentralized communication.
Gold and Silver: The Eternal Medium
This is why gold and silver are rising.
Gold has climbed to fresh records, pulled back in behind-the-scenes financing, and set to rise further. Silver is set to surge again.
The crowd is beginning to see the through-line.
Gold does not change. Times change. Pendulums of society swing. Gold does not expire. Gold does not require permission.
Gold exists outside the extraction apparatus. It always has.
In Florence, merchants held florins to bypass the nobility’s tolls. The medium is the same. The message is the same. Only the rulers have changed.
The Medieval Pattern Repeats
In the 13th century, the nobility controlled the land and the serfs. The merchants controlled the florins.
The nobility tried to extract from the merchants through taxes, tariffs, and restrictions. The merchants bypassed them through trade routes, city alliances, and gold.
The nobility did not disappear. They adapted. They married into merchant families. They created new titles. They absorbed the new power structure.
But the shift had already happened. Power had moved from a closed system (land and human labor) to a more open system (gold and trade).
The same pattern is happening now.
The old institutions are creating digital currencies, embracing some cryptocurrencies, positioning themselves as the solution.
But the shift has already happened. Power is moving from a closed system (centralized fiat) to a more open system (decentralized finance, sound money, gold).
The merchants of Florence would recognize this pattern.
The florin was their parallel structure.
The Pendulum Swings
This is the cycle.
A new medium emerges. Power shifts. The old structure adapts or falls.
And Canetti’s crowd is stirring.
The reversal crowd is forming. Citizens are beginning to see the extraction apparatus for what it is.
The rulers are redirecting.
They’re seeding fear, creating scapegoats, offering solutions.
Some of the crowd will attack the designated enemies.
And some will see the through-line.
Decentralized systems.
New technology for exchange and communication.
Gold.
The eternal medium that bypasses extraction.
What the Merchants Knew
The merchants of Florence understood something the nobility did not:
Value moves.
The nobility thought power was land. The merchants knew power was the medium.
Land can be conquered. Gold can be moved.
The old extraction apparatus wants us to believe power is in their institutions, their banks, their currencies, their digital ledgers.
But power is in the medium.
Gold is the through-line behind innovation. It moves. It bypasses. Gold exists outside their system.
The merchants of Florence bypassed the nobility’s tolls with florins.
They didn’t fight the nobility. They went around them.
The Bankers’ Ball
As this cycle intensifies, the old structure circles tightly to protect itself.
They toast amid the flames. They offer solutions that preserve their control. They redirect the crowd toward enemies and fears.
But the merchants are already moving.
The new florin is already in circulation. Gold is already rising. The parallel structure is already forming.
The song remains the same:
Keepers scare the hordes at home
Pitchforked peasants gnawing bones
Crusts and clowns for thee was said
Tellings of tipping and losing one’s head
The crowd stirs. The merchants bypass.
And the through-line remains.
The Through-Line of Civilization
Gold connects the pyramids of Egypt to the satellites of SpaceX. It connects the merchants of Florence to the miners of the Klondike. It connects the florin to the blockchain.
It is the through-line that every extraction institution has tried to control.
It is civilization’s yardstick. Everything else is revalued against it.
The currencies rise and fall. The empires rise and fall. The rulers rise and fall.
Gold remains.
Tech brings a new way around.

Thank you to the late David Crosby for his kind messages, including the compliment on the lyrics and music for A Terrible Breeze.
A Terrible Breeze (War and Social Media)
The news comes down
A little bluebird sings
Words of war
Fire and furious things
Of testing might
‘Til no patience knows
If keeping still
Still keeps you safe at home
There’s a terrible breeze
They speak of today
Of threats that used to live a world away
We all know wind
will blow both ways
And a terrible breeze can blow it all away
A worldwide net
Sees our village grow
Until we all forget
What each one used to know
How a blind bird’s wings
Can reach the shore
And turn that wheel of peace and war
Village fools sinking down, down, down
Debt and gold wound in numbered shrouds
Deal of a life it’s bread and clowns
Can we afford another go around?
The news comes down.
It’s a terrible breeze. The news comes down.

The Gods of the Copybook Headings
words by Rudyard Kipling and music by Elaine Diane Taylor
from the album Preparing for the Fall.
The copybooks of the early 1900s gave us all the wisdom we need. The sayings that were copied are the truths, the gods of our world. All the empires who followed the gods of the marketplace have fallen, and there’s terror and slaughter when the gods of the copybook headings return. Lyrics: Rudyard Kipling.
