Jim Rickards, Coffee and Golden Moments

When people used to ask me where I had my finest cup of coffee, my answer was always at an outdoor cafe in Whistler, Canada.

I have a new answer now.

A few days ago I had the pleasure of chatting with Jim Rickards, author of the bestselling book Currency Wars: The Making of the Next Global Crisis. We met in the beautiful Fairmont Hotel in Vancouver, Canada, where Jim was speaking at the Agora Financial Investment Symposium.

Among the many things written about Jim:

From Wikipedia –

James G. Rickards is an American lawyer, economist, and investment banker with 35 years of experience working in capital markets on Wall Street. He is a writer and is a regular commentator on finance. Rickards advised clients of an impending financial collapse, of a decline in the dollar and a sharp rise in the price of gold, all years in advance. Rickards is the author of The New York Times bestseller Currency Wars, published in 2011.

Rickards is the senior managing director for market intelligence for the consulting firm, Omnis, Inc.  where he advises about political instability and political risk that might affect markets or vice versa.

He testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight Committee on Science and Technology in 2009 about the risks of financial modeling, and the 2008 financial crisis.

Here is a blurb that really explains the threat that Jim sees regarding gold and the Federal Reserve’s quantitative easing:

Rickards’ first book, Currency Wars: The Making of the Next Global Crisis, was published on November 10, 2011 by Portfolio, an imprint of Penguin Group. In it, Rickards argues that currency wars are not just an economic or monetary concern, but a national security concern. He maintains that the United States is facing serious threats to its national security, from clandestine gold purchases by China to the hidden agendas of sovereign wealth funds, and that greater than any single threat is the very real danger of the collapse of the dollar itself. Rickards explains that the Federal Reserve is involved in what he calls “the greatest gamble in the history of finance,” via a sustained effort to stimulate the economy by printing money on a trillion-dollar scale.

Jim is seen interviewed on many financial TV news programs, as well as podcast interviews on King World News and other online sites.

To the endless list of accolades I am adding my own: Jim Rickards is lovely, and he really cares about people.

We chatted about the world, about gold, about systems and balance. About avalanches, lobsters and credit. About Crosby, Stills and Nash, Marshall McLuhan and the best of cool and hot mediums. Performing. Being understood. Fairness. Warnings. Prophecy. The world macro and micro.

Jim advised me and inspired me, and gave insight into things both personal and professional.

We all have golden moments in our lives – ones that feel valuable and lasting. This was one of mine.

Thank you, Jim.

If I can find the song by Stephen Stills that you mentioned then I’ll cover it to go along with Helplessly Hoping.

I see Jim as not just a canary in a coal mine, but as Joseph, who was able to see and speak about the risk of a future that we can still turn from if the signs are heeded .

There was a tweet a few nights ago that mentioned proofreading the text for his next book.

I can’t wait for it to arrive with wise words for us all.

Until then, it’s just Another Week on Wall Street.

Another Week on Wall Street

See the bankers wave the Wall Street wands
See the conjured piles of paper green
Now they’re betting all their tricks go wrong
They’re betting the world as you know it
If they win
You lose the whole world as you know it

Ever seen a long con?
Ever seen a tampered wand?
Ever seen the betters sipping tea
Making bets just sipping tea
Well don’t talk back
Your betters, your bankers
are having a tee, hee, hee

Heyo heyo, just another week on Wall Street
Heyo heyo  just another week on Wall Street

A little grease (Greece) is floating out to sea
Little PIGS (Portugal, Italy, Greece, Spain) are bobbing up and down
So send a storm and then we’ll see
when the tide goes out who’s naked on the beach

Who’s that wizard hiding behind that hedge?
Who’s that wizard hiding behind that hedge (fund)?
But I’m just speculating

See the bankers wave the Wall Street wands
See the conjured piles of paper green
Now they’re betting all their tricks go wrong
They’re betting the world as you know it
If they win
You lose the whole damn world as you know it

Ever seen a long con?
Ever seen a tampered wand?
Ever seen the betters sipping tea
Making bets just sipping tea
Well don’t talk back
Your betters, your bankers
are having a tee, hee, hee

Heyo heyo, just another week on Wall Street
Heyo heyo  just another week on Wall Street
